How It Works
Pregnancy calorie needs increase gradually: no extra calories in the first trimester, +340/day in the second, and +450/day in the third (ACOG guidelines). "Eating for two" is a myth -- you need quality, not just quantity. Not medical advice.
The Formula
TDEE = BMR x Activity Multiplier
Pregnancy calories = TDEE + trimester bonus (0, +340, or +450)
BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor): 10 x weight_kg + 6.25 x height_cm - 5 x age - 161
Pregnancy calories = TDEE + trimester bonus (0, +340, or +450)
BMR (Mifflin-St Jeor): 10 x weight_kg + 6.25 x height_cm - 5 x age - 161
Variables
- TDEE — Total Daily Energy Expenditure
- +340 — Extra calories needed in second trimester
- +450 — Extra calories needed in third trimester
Example
140 lbs, 5'4", age 28, moderately active, second trimester = ~2,340 calories/day.
