How It Works

In the US, there is no federal paid maternity leave. FMLA provides 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave. Income during leave typically comes from PTO, short-term disability (6-8 weeks at 50-70%), and state paid leave programs (available in CA, NJ, NY, WA, MA, CT, OR, CO, and others). Not financial or legal advice.

The Formula

Total income = PTO pay + Disability pay + State leave pay
Income gap = Normal salary x total weeks - total leave income
FMLA: 12 weeks unpaid, job-protected (employers with 50+ employees)

Variables

  • FMLA — Family and Medical Leave Act -- 12 weeks unpaid protection
  • STD — Short-term disability -- typically 60% salary for 6-8 weeks
  • State leave — Paid family leave programs (varies by state)

Example

$1,200/week salary, 2 weeks PTO, 6 weeks disability at 60%, 12 weeks total: $6,720 income vs $14,400 normal = $7,680 gap.

Tips

  • Start saving in a "maternity leave fund" early in pregnancy
  • Check if your employer offers paid parental leave beyond disability
  • Some states (CA, NY, WA) offer 12+ weeks of paid family leave
  • Short-term disability must usually be enrolled BEFORE pregnancy begins
  • Keep health insurance premiums in mind -- you may need to pay your share during unpaid leave
