How It Works
Fetal kick counting (also called "Count to 10") is recommended starting at 28 weeks. You should feel at least 10 movements in 2 hours. Count any movement -- kicks, rolls, swishes, or jabs. Not medical advice -- contact your provider if movement decreases.
The Formula
Guideline: 10 movements in 2 hours = normal
Rate = Movements / Time (minutes) x 60
Rate = Movements / Time (minutes) x 60
Variables
- 10 in 2 — At least 10 movements in a 2-hour window
- Rate — Movements per hour
Example
10 kicks in 30 minutes = 20/hour rate, projected 40 in 2 hours -- well above minimum.
Tips
- Count at the same time each day, ideally when baby is usually active
- Lie on your side and focus -- eating a snack can stimulate movement
- Babies have sleep cycles of 20-40 minutes -- do not panic if there is a quiet period
- Contact your provider immediately if you notice a significant decrease in movement
- Kick counting is most reliable after 28 weeks of pregnancy
