How It Works
The general guideline is 2.5 oz of formula per pound of body weight per day, up to about 32 oz maximum. Newborns start with small frequent feedings and gradually take more per session. Not medical advice -- consult your pediatrician.
The Formula
Daily ounces = Weight (lbs) x 2.5
Max 32 oz/day after 4 months
Per feeding = Daily total / number of feedings
Max 32 oz/day after 4 months
Per feeding = Daily total / number of feedings
Variables
- 2.5 oz/lb — Standard formula guideline per pound of body weight
- 32 oz — Maximum daily formula intake (AAP recommendation)
Example
10 lb baby at 3 months: 10 x 2.5 = 25 oz/day, ~6 feedings = ~4.2 oz per bottle.
Tips
- Never prop a bottle or force a baby to finish -- follow their hunger cues
- Formula should be prepared with the exact scoop-to-water ratio on the label
- Prepared formula is good for 1 hour at room temperature, 24 hours refrigerated
- Switch to whole milk at 12 months (not before)
- If baby consistently drains bottles, they may need a slight increase
