How It Works

The USDA estimates the average first-year cost of a baby at $12,000-$15,000 (without childcare). Childcare can double or triple this. The biggest variables are feeding method, childcare, and whether you buy new or used gear. Not financial advice.

Tips

  • Register for big-ticket items (crib, stroller, car seat) as gifts
  • Buy clothes in bulk at consignment sales -- babies outgrow them fast
  • Many communities have "Buy Nothing" groups for free baby items
