How It Works

Baby food portions increase gradually from a few tablespoons at 4-6 months to full meals by 12 months. Texture should progress from thin purees to finger foods. Breastmilk or formula remains the primary nutrition source until 12 months. Not medical advice.

The Formula

Portions increase with age:
4-6 mo: ~3 tbsp/day
6-8 mo: ~7 tbsp/day
8-10 mo: ~12 tbsp/day
10-12 mo: ~14 tbsp/day
12+ mo: ~18 tbsp/day

Variables

  • tbsp — Tablespoon -- the standard baby food serving unit
  • Texture progression — Purees -> mashed -> soft chunks -> table food

Example

8-month-old eating 3 meals/day: ~12 tbsp total, about 4 tbsp per meal with mashed/lumpy texture.

Tips

  • Let baby set the pace -- never force them to finish a serving
  • Offer a variety of colors and flavors to build adventurous eating
  • Introduce potential allergens (peanut, egg, dairy) early, one at a time
  • Water can be offered in a sippy cup starting at 6 months
